2 Week Plan #3
My first goal of my 2 week plan was to share a post on instagram informing my followers on more of the general facts about eating disorders. I shares a post with 5 slides, all of which included different facts and statistics about eating disorders in general and the harmful affects of them. The first post was sharing the percentages and numbers of people with eating disorders. It shares facts such as the most common ages to develop them and the percentages of being who were actually 100% cured from their ED. The second slide shared facts about each of the 3 most common types of EDs, Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and Binge Eating Disorder. The third slide in the instagram post shows the stats of what age and gender is most apt to develop an ED. The fourth slide shows what percentage each disorder has over all the EDs combined. The last slide shares the symptoms of the 3 most common EDs and what goes on during each o0f them, including what they do to your body. https://www.instagram.com/p/CWaygmfLfym/
The second goal of my 2 week plan was to interview someone who has had experience with eating disorders, or is knowledgeable in that felid. I reached out to 2 individuals , the first being Colleen Werner. Colleen is a plus sized ballerina who has struggled with eating disorders in the past as a result of toxicity in the dance community. You can find out more about her background in my previous blog posts. the second person I reached out to was Hailey Birch. She is a fitness coach and social media influencer who is very vocal about her past and how she struggled with EDs in the past. Unfortunately neither of them responded, but I reached out via instagram DM which may be a difficult form of communication for people with large followings. I instead did more research on both of them to try to find some of the answers myself. One thing I found out was that Colleen is not only an advocate for body positivity but she also speaks on mental health and mindfulness. I also found that Hailey turned her history with EDs into the reason why she found her passion for the gym and working-out, which she later turned into her career. The next goal of mine will be to reach out to a nutritionist or someone who works in this field, but I wanted to try to contact someone who had had experience in this field prior.
The third goal of my 2 week plan was to do more research on food and how what you eat can affect your body and energy levels. I took most of my information from the nutrition blog that I had created for physics class last year. I did heavy research on nutrition and how your body developed different foods/ what is best for you to be fueling your body with. “Good” calories are nutrient-dense, which means you get the most bang for your calorie buck. For example, compare 100 calories of soda to 100 calories of milk. 100 calories of a healthy food with a lot of nutritional value is way more beneficial for your health than 100 calories of an unhealthy food. There are different “qualities of calories” which differentiates the nutrient density. You have to limit your intake on foods which calories only consist of sugars and fats because there is no nutritional value in those foods. The goal is to eat sensible portions of of mostly nutrient-dense foods so that your body is getting what it needs to stay healthy. If your diet consists of mostly nutrient dense foods then there will be some room in your diet for less unhealthy foods because you have already consumed enough food with beneficial values and nutrients. More facts and stats are planning on going up on my instagram next week!
My final goal of my 2 week plan was to provide more information on what eating disorders do to your body. I found a few valuable sources that contained this information one being, https://www.helpguide.org/articles/eating-disorders/anorexia-nervosa.htm and another being https://www.myedin.org/understanding-anorexia-nervosa. I combined this information and shared it to a post on my instagram, https://www.instagram.com/p/CWv_ytpPxNz/. When you think of EDs you think skinny and tired but those are not nearly all of the symptoms people struggling face. Something that may not come to mind is the fact that your hair can thin or fall out. They can also affect the way your brain works and your concentration levels, your blood pressure level, kidney stones, blood issues, and much more. EDs make your confidence levels drop because things happen such as your skin turning yellow and becoming extremely dry and brittle. Eating disorders are traumatizing and extremely difficult to deal with, and most people don’t think of all of the other ways it can affect your body. in some cases, these issues can be short-term but sometimes they can last a lifetime and your body will never return the same.
